How to Satisfy Your Soul

Is your soul satisfied? How do you feed your own soul? What does shape your soul? It does make a huge difference what we let enter into our souls. We can harm our souls with wrong choices.

“We work to feed our appetites;
Meanwhile our souls go hungry.
(Ecclesiastes 6:7, MSG)

“Don’t dabble in the occult or traffic with mediums; you’ll pollute your souls. I am God, your God. (Leviticus 19: 31, MSG)

“Look at that man, bloated by self-importance—
   full of himself but soul-empty.
But the person in right standing before God
   through loyal and steady believing
   is fully alive, really alive.
(Habakkuk 2: 4, MSG)

Hungry souls, polluted souls or soul-emptiness are not what we are looking for in life. Yet we might very well end up there if we don’t choose wisely what shapes our souls. The easy street will never give us what it promises. But the person in right standing before God will never regret his choices. God has not and will not break his promises.

I’ll refresh tired bodies;
   I’ll restore tired souls.
(Jeremiah 31:25, MSG)

Dear friend, listen well to my words;
   tune your ears to my voice.
Keep my message in plain view at all times.
   Concentrate! Learn it by heart!
Those who discover these words live, really live;
   body and soul, they’re bursting with health.
(Proverbs 4: 20-22, MSG)

As we mature in faith we need to learn to feed our souls to keep ourselves spiritually satisfied. It is not our pastor’s duty to keep our souls refreshed. We need to take responsibility for our own spiritual well-being.  God has given us tools to refresh our souls regularly in order to be bursting with spiritual health. The main thing is to have an on-going and loving relationship with Jesus.

On the final and climactic day of the Feast, Jesus took his stand. He cried out, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. Rivers of living water will brim and spill out of the depths of anyone who believes in me this way, just as the Scripture says.” (He said this in regard to the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were about to receive. The Spirit had not yet been given because Jesus had not yet been glorified.) (John 7: 37-39, MSG)

Jesus is the word of God. If we regularly read the Scriptures and drink deep draughts of Jesus our souls will always be satisfied. If we wander away from Jesus soon we find ourselves soul-empty, drained, and incredibly thirsty. What we learned last week does not satisfy us today. We need to feed our souls every day. The only way to water our souls is to cling to Jesus. There is no where else to turn. Because he has the words of eternal life.

Gracious God,
We come to you thirsty and hungry,
nourish our souls.
We bring to you our tired bodies and souls,
refresh and restore us.
We offer our lives to you,
equip and empower us.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen
